After the script has been written, our next stage is to develop a shot list. That shot list can take the form of a formal list or it can take a more visual form in the way of a storyboard. A storyboard is a series of small rough sketches showing the action in each shot along with a short description/shot type. The purpose of this document is to provide the first visual information for the idea that was only written word up to this point (the script). There are numerous templates and formats for a storyboard, but all serve the same purpose.
